Ja, een volmondig ja op de vraag of ik me Amsterdammer voel. Ik woon hier al sinds 1975 en ik kan me niet voorstellen dat ik in een andere stad in Nederland zou willen wonen. Want Amsterdam is toch de stad ‘waar het gebeurt’. Dat was destijds voor mij de reden om hier naartoe te verhuizen. Nog steeds kan ik genieten van de prachtige gevelwanden langs het water, de grote rijkdom aan cultuur en de eindeloze hoeveelheid aan mogelijkheden die je hier hebt. Ik fiets graag kris kras door de stad, van de ene sfeer in de andere, en dan laat ik me verrassen en rijd ik onbekende straten in.
Toen ik hier kwam wonen, waren het de jaren zeventig, de jaren van protest. Ik ging bewust wonen in Oost, een volksbuurt. Het waren jaren van protest en samen met een groep gelijkgezinden zette ik me in voor verbetering van de woonomstandigheden in de buurt. We woonden als collectief in een leegstaand pand dat binnen 4 jaar gesloopt zou gaan worden. Samen met actieve wijkbewoners konden we dat met veel inspanningen voorkomen. De huizen kwamen in handen van een woningcorporatie die ze als sociale woningbouw verhuurde. Wij konden er blijven wonen.

Ik heb in Amsterdam steeds gewerkt in de kunsteducatie. Rond het jaar 2000 werd ik gevraagd door stadsdeel Oost en de toenmalige directeur van het CBK om een kunstfestival te organiseren met als doel om de kunstinstellingen en de bewoners in dit stadsdeel dichter bij elkaar te brengen. Samen met Mick Witteveen heb ik toen de naam De Rode Loper bedacht. Veel culturen kennen een rode loper. Het is een teken dat je welkom bent. En speciaal. Dus hebben wij bij alle kunstinstellingen in Oost de rode loper uitgerold. Later is de organisatie gesplitst in een festivalorganisatie en een voor kunsteducatie. Die laatste heet officieel: Stichting Kunsteducatie De Rode Loper op School. Daar ben ik directeur van.

Door de fusie van de stadsdelen Oost-Watergraafsmeer en Zeeburg maken nu zo’n 24 basisscholen gebruik van ons kunstaanbod. Het allerleukst vind ik om initiatieven te nemen voor nieuwe programma’s en om daarvoor kunstenaars en scholen te enthousiasmeren. Zo heb ik aan de basis gestaan van het spreekwoordenproject Pluk de dag, pluk de taal en een werkvorm ontwikkeld waarbij kinderen hun eigen wijsheden kunnen bedenken. Het is voor hen een eye-opener te ontdekken dat ze zelf ook wijs zijn. Een kind bedacht: Elk gras kun je maaien. Prachtig toch? Zo een kind heeft een positieve levenshouding! En kunst kan zo’n kind helpen dat te ontdekken. Want kunst laat je op een andere manier naar jezelf en je omgeving kijken. Daarom verrijkt kunst en kunnen we niet zonder.

Begin deze eeuw herhaalde de geschiedenis in Oost zich. De woningcorporatie vond nu zelf dat alle verouderde panden in de Derde Oosterparkstraat plaats moesten maken voor eenvormige nieuwbouw, terwijl wij, bewoners, voor renovatie waren. Het zijn hier prachtige kleinschalige negentiende-eeuwse panden, met fraaie kenmerkende gevels vol ornamentiek, variatie in stenen en bijzonder metselwerk. Ik heb toen de Vereniging van Vrienden van de 19e eeuwse Ring opgericht, affiches verspreid en vooral veel ingesproken bij raadsvergaderingen. Na een paar jaar van actievoeren is het gelukt om de fraaie negentiende-eeuwse gevels aan beide zijden van dit straatgedeelte te behouden. Achter de gevels zijn de woningen geheel gerenoveerd. Bij de oplevering was iedereen blij dat dit bijzondere stukje Amsterdam er nog staat: de directeur van de woningbouwcorporatie, vertegenwoordigers van het stadsdeel, de bewoners en de aannemers. En hier woon ik nog steeds. Als ik de straat inkom en de gerestaureerde façades zie, ben ik trots dat ik hieraan een steentje heb bijgedragen.

Yes, an absolute yes, if you ask me if I feel an Amsterdammer. I have lived here since 1975 and cannot imagine wanting to live in a different city in the Netherlands. Because Amsterdam is ‘where it´s happening´ after all. Back then that was the reason for me to move here. I still enjoy looking at the splendid gabels of the canal houses, the huge richness in culture and the endless possibilities there are here. I like to cycle criss cross through the city, from one atmosphere to the next and then I like to surprise myself by turning into a street I have never seen before.
In the first few years, I decided to live in the working class East district on purpose. Those were protest years and together with a bunch of like-minded people we set about improving living conditions. We lived in a collective in an empty building that was due to be demolished in the future. With the help of local residents, we were able to prevent that. The buildings came into the hands of a housing association and rented out to people with low incomes.

I have always worked in art education in Amsterdam. In around 2000, I was asked by the East disctrict council and the former managing director of the CBK art centre to organise a art festival with the aim of bringing local residents and art organisations in the area closer together. I thought up the name The Red Carpet with Mick Witteveen. Many cultures are familiar with a red carpet. It is a sign that you are welcome. And special. So we rolled out red carpets at the entrances of all the art organisations in East Amsterdam. Later the organisation split into a festival organisation and an art education organisation. The latter is officially called: Art Eduction Foundation The Red Carpet at School. Which I am now the managing director of.

The merger of the East Watergraafsmeer and Zeeburg disctricts mean that around 24 primary schools use our art services. Most of all I like to start up initiatives for new art programmes and to get artists and schools enthusiastic about it. I started a proverb project Pluk de dag, pluk de taal (Seize the Day, seize the language) a method developed to get children to make up their own sayings. It’s an eye-opener for children to discover they can make up their own sayings. A child thinks: You can mow every grass. Brilliant? A child like this has a positive attitude to life! And art helps children like this discover this. Because art helps you look at yourself and your surroundings in a different way. That is why art is enriching and we cannot do without it.

At the turn of the millennium, history repeated itself in East Amsterdam. The housing association thought all the aging buildings on the Third Ooster Park Street should be demolished for new buildings, while we, the residents, wanted renovation. These are splendid small-size nineteenth century buildings, with beautiful gabels with lots of ornamental decoration, variation in bricks and spectacular masonary. So I set up the Association of Friends of the 19th Century Ring, distributed posters and spoke at many council meetings. After a couple of years of campaigning, we managed to save both sides of this nineteenth century street. Behind the gabels the houses were fully renovated. When it was finished everyone was glad that a piece of Amsterdam was still standing: the managing director of the housing association, the district council representatives, the local residents and the building companies. And I still live here. When I walk through the street and see the restored facades of the buildings, I am proud that I helped preserve them.
